Spike Lee & Prince Estate Sued For Allegedly Ripping Off 90s Song Girl 6
LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) – Hot off of his very first Oscar win, Spike Lee has been slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit over a Prince song that appeared in one of his films back in the 90s.
Prince and Spike teamed up for his 1996 film, “Girl 6” with Prince writing and performing the title song for the soundtrack.
Now, a lawsuit filed by a man named James Brandon is alleging that the pair stole the song from him.
Brandon is claiming he was part of a group called GOMAB that in 1993 recorded a song called “Phone Sex.” The group allegedly demoed the song for Spike’s uncle, Clarence Lee, who then forwarded it to the director. Brandon says he never heard back from Lee.
With “Girl 6″ being about a phone sex operator, one can easily deduce similarities. Brandon is reportedly claiming the song “shares substantial and significant similarities” with his work, including in the trumpet arrangement and at least part of the vocal arrangement.
According to TMZ, Brandon is suing Spike and the Prince estate for all profits they made off the song.
