Season 3 of The Fosters premieres tonight at 8/7c on ABC Family.
CS4U: At such a young age, how did you prepare for being brought on to such an emotional and dramatic show?
Gavin Macintosh: “Peter and Bradley, the show’s producers really helped me out, they helped me really get into the moment and they told us what the show means and who the characters really are and I have to give them a really big thanks because they are the ones who really helped us out with that.”
Hayden Byerly: “You know, from when I first started on the Fosters, I think the character has developed with me over time; On the TV Show, and just having a gradual movement toward the character as he is now, is something that has always helped me in changing the way the I act and changing things that I have to do.”
CS4U: Let’s talk about how Twitter went crazy for Jonnor last season during the kiss — you are probably the youngest same-sex kiss making television history. What is that like?
Gavin Macintosh: “It was incredible I’ve never been apart of something like that, which had so much fandom response to it and such positive reaction, it was great to be a part of it.”
CS4U: The fans are obsessed with Jonnor’s relationship and are excited for their storyline to develop. Can you tell us what we can expect to see from their relationship?
Gavin Macintosh: “I think every relationship has its problems and we will experience that in season 3. Jude doesn’t really want them to go public about being gay and Connor does so there is some conflict there. As you see in the previous seasons they are more than just in a relationship they are best friends also as anyone would be who is in a relationship. They are very strong together and whatever obstacle they face they are going to get over it.”
CS4U: Season 3 of the fosters picks up on June 8th — can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect to see from you this season?
Gavin Macintosh: “Connor has more moments with him and Jude.”
Hayden Byerly: “Well the main story line – Of course Jude has always been a sweet kid. You’ll see a lot more with him and his sister. We will see a little bit more of what do Jonner decide to do about their new young teen relationship and we’re going to see a little bit more of how they choose to develop that.”
CS4U: If you had it your way, where would you like to see your characters go in this upcoming season?
Gavin Macintosh: “Well last season, we saw Connor get shot in the foot and that was kind of more action. I would love to see more action and something else can happen to him. I’m not sure because the writers are so talented in the way they turn direction so quickly and it’s just really engaging when they write the script. I’m leaving it up to them.”
CS4U: What would you say has been your favorite part of being apart of a show that has such a huge fan base?
Gavin Macintosh: “My favorite part is interacting with the fans and also witnessing the impact the show has on people. It has so much impact on the LGBTQ community and just normal kids who are facing the problems of not knowing if it is right to like another boy. When they see the show they are like oh there’s people like me and I’m not the odd one out. It gives people a voice to stand up for what they believe in and I think that’s my favorite part of the show.”
Hayden Byerly: “I think having a huge fan base is awesome because you get a lot of positivity. I think its so incredible because we are able to teach such a large quantity of people about acceptance of your feelings, and that all these different things are okay; And with all these different people-just that you know that they’re not wrong or bad.”
CS4U: Since our website is called CelebSecrets4U, can you share with our readers a secret from the set?
Gavin Macintosh: “One time Hayden and I had a soda in the school room and we spilled the soda and it went all over the schoolroom so now it was all sticky. They grabbed us to go film and when we came back the whole schoolroom was covered in ants and it was a fiasco.”
Hayden Byerly: “Well, I don’t know how many people actually know this but I always thought this was pretty cool. A secret from the set is that the Foster House is actually in two separate pieces. So you have the bottom floor of the house, and then you have the top floor- so they’re not actually stacked on top of each other like a normal house, they’re actually separated. So when you see the kids go up the stairs, from down below, it actually leads up to nothing- it’s just an empty area.”
